What are gastrointestinal diseases?

Gastric disorder, or Gastrointestinal disease, affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the mouth to the anus. Following are the two types of Gastrointestinal disease:
  • Functional gastrointestinal diseases – In this disorder GI tract looks normal when examined, but doesn’t move properly. Some common examples of this disorder include constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, food poisoning, gas, etc.
  • Structural gastrointestinal diseases – This happens when the bowel may look normal, but doesn’t perform as expected. Sometimes, structural abnormality needs to be removed surgically. Some examples of this include strictures, stenosis, hemorrhoids, diverticular disease, colon polyps, and colon cancer.
