FNAC

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology

When you start to notice a bump or lump in superficial areas of the body such as the breast and neck, it can be cancer, or not. To be sure about the possibilities of cancer, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is recommended by physicians. FNAC is also the same procedure used to determine the possibilities of thyroid, salivary glands and lymph node illnesses. During the test, a needle is inserted into the lump to take a sample of cells. The further diagnosis is performed with the help of a microscope where a doctor will determine if the mass or lump is cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign). while most of the time, these lumps may be related to infection or inflammation, it is suggested to conduct the test for better security and to treat cancer at the initial stage. The followings are the few reasons why FNAC may be performed:
  • Nodules in the thyroid gland
  • Enlarged or abnormal lymph nodes
  • Neck cysts
  • Lumps or masses in the salivary glands

Why Is FNA Important?

A mass or lump in your neck area may indicate a serious problem such as cancer. Of course, not all the lumps in the neck are not cancerous, but it is safe to do a detailed analysis or biopsy. Your physician may recommend FNAC frequently because this is a quick, hassle-free method of diagnosis, and can often be performed in the doctor’s office. Apart from a detailed analysis, your doctor may also ask a few questions related to the symptoms and your medical history to help determine your risk of cancer. It is suggested that when found early, most types of cancers can be treated with proper treatment. In case of a lump in your head or neck area, make sure to see a specialist for a timely diagnosis.
